Chew Valley Lake
Bristol Water
Another beautiful day and another chance to chase pike with the fly. I really enjoyed my first experience on the 2nd, and so back for more fun and games. This time I fished with a friend. We spent the afternoon testing different parts of the lake, but with little success. I reckon I had a couple of plucks and later on a green torpedo shot after the fly but then turned away. Did it see the boat, or was the fly or retrieve not convincing?
Anyway as the sun became low in the sky, things began to change. There were swirls and splashes on the surface. At one point there were roach fry scattering in all directions, leaping out of the water to escape a terrible fate. All the activity was centred around Woodford. Were the parts of the lake we had visited earlier now behaving in the same way? I wish I knew, but we stayed put where the fish were.
And we were rewarded with pike and perch coming to the fly. Pike are strong and impressive animals. They are great sport on a fly rod, and I want to discover more about how to fish for them. There's a lot to learn and I'm a very keen student.
